The Americans is one of those insanely good, insanely underrated programmes. You’ve probably been told by someone, at some point to watch this amazing, sexy, must-see TV show, and you haven’t yet, but now you will… Promise.

It would seem that No one watches The Americans, apart from its fans that is and they absolutely love it. Critics hale it as the best show on TV and yet ask the person sitting next to you they probably haven’t even heard of it, let alone seen it.

Set in the 80s, Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth Jennings (Keri Russell) pose as travel agents living just outside of Washington DC, but they are really Russian spies sent undercover and strategically integrated into the community as American citizens. Ready to binge-watch yet?

Audiences don’t only witness the pairs terrifying dare defying missions to save their country and terminate imperialism during the pinnacle height of the cold war, but they also get to experience their challenges to live a normal family life together and bring up their two children.

There’s also a killer 80s soundtrack and undercover outfits galore, which add a lot of humour to the show giving it some light against the dark, serious moments.

Because the Jennings are spies, logically that leads to lots of suspenseful, adrenaline-high situations, the near-misses alone are enough to give you a heart-attack. There’s car chases, explosions, gunplay, and of course gruesome deaths, as the two get up to all sort of illegal and dangerous behaviour. Thought you’d want to watch it now.

The Americans is available now on Amazon Prime Video or ITV Encore.
